IISER Kolkata Invited for the Integrated Ph.D Programme

Eligibility :    BE/B.Tech / BSc (Biology, Mathematics / Applied Mathematics, Physics / Applied Physics) & MBBS

Eligibility Criteria :  

Qualification: Students with a B. Sc/B.E/B.Tech/M.B.B.S degree from any recognized university/institute/ college can apply for the Integrated Ph. D programme in Biological, Chemical, Earth, Mathematical and Physical Sciences.  Candidates need to secure a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades in their qualifying examinations. Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 60% in aggregate, based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held so far.

Students applying for an Integrated Ph.D. Programme are required to have the following subject(s) in the undergraduate courses:

Biological Sciences Chemistry
Chemical Sciences Physics and Mathematics
Earth Sciences Physics/Chemistry and Mathematics
Physics Mathematics
Mathematics Open
Mode of Selection :  Institute-level committee (s) will scrutinize all the applications, and prepare a shortlist of about 100 candidates, who may be called for written test/interview. The Institute will finally declare the list of selected candidates on the Institute website.
Student Intake : In the Academic Session 2011-12 a total of 40 students may be selected, covering all sciences.  A tentative distribution is:  Physics (9), Chemistry (9), Biology (9), Earth Sciences (9) and Mathematics (4). Students will be given a monthly fellowship.


Company Profile :

The Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and based on the recommendation of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, decided to create five undergraduate science universities. One of them is located at Kolkata and was started from 2006. Named as the INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (IISER), these IISERs are designed to reach the prestigious position in the global setting that IISc, IIMs and IITs presently enjoy.

Each IISER is an autonomous institution awarding its own degrees. The central theme of the IISER is to integrate education with research so that undergraduate teaching as well as doctoral and postdoctoral research work are carried out in symbiosis. Students are encouraged to carry out research projects during the vacation periods in the first four years of their Masters programme in various research institutes outside IISER.


How To Apply:

Applications should be made in the prescribed application form. The duly filled in application (save as Name. Subject. doc, for example: Mrinal Singh. Physics. doc) should be sent by e-mail to pbip@iiserkol.ac.in The last date for applications to be received is 15 th May ,2011. Apart from attested copies of all marks-sheets (secondary examination onward), the following documents must accompany the application:  (i) confidential letters of assessment  of the applicant in the prescribed form,  from two teachers who have taught courses and would be able to evaluate the student as a potential  research worker. The teachers should seal the envelopes and sign across the flaps; (ii) a hard copy of the application.
